How to write an Essay: |
| Step 7: Analysis |
|
Analysing all the resources which you have compiled from the internet, scholarly databases and the library is the next stage of your research writing. Comprehensive analysis takes place in a series of systematic steps:
- Compile the viewpoints of all the different authors and sources.
- Carefully read and understand what the authors are trying to prove and the arguments their present in their defence.
- Devise your own opinion on the basis of these arguments.

Present your Argument with a Claim and supporting Reasons |
Once you have identified and clearly understood the claims made by authors, it is now time to present your argument and viewpoint to readers, by making a claim and substantiating your claim through appropriate reasons. An argument is not valid if it does not have a claim and valid reasons to support the claim.
- Develop your argument
- Identify the primary Claim you are trying to make
- Find 3 or more reasons to support the claim
- Provide authentic scholarly sources to validate your claim and support your argument
Ideally, every claim you make should begin with a new paragraph and must be supported with a minimum of three valid reasons, explanations or evidence to prove that your claim is true. In order for your claim to be validated, it is essential that you provide authentic sources to substantiate it. |
Assess the Argument |
Once your argument with a valid claim and supporting reasons is ready, assess it for any flaws:
- Check for any counter arguments which can make the claim appear weak
- Check if enough evidence has been provided to support the claim.
- Check for statistical data, quotes or any other evidence which can make your claim stronger
- Make sure that the in-text citations adhere to citation style preferred by your professor or university.
