It’s almost like the beginning of a bad joke: What is the most nutritious fast food available to the American consumer? The short answer is nothing. Don’t eat fast food if you have any sort of respect for your body, or you’re simply trying to eat something that is comprised of actual food. Considering that most fast food can contain anywhere from 50-100% saturated fat, and no, that’s not a typo.
The easiest target is often the largest one, and there’s no avoiding the megalithic McDonalds. Serving nearly 47 million customers daily, it is one of the world’s largest chain of fast food restaurants, and was at one time the largest global restaurant chain.
In response to obesity trends in Western markets, and having been criticized globally over health concerns related to their products, McDonalds has modified their menu a bit to include healthier alternatives, with obvious additions such as salads and fruit. The fact remains, though, that the majority of their menu is comprised of chemical food product; which is to say it isn’t actually food, but contains food. How can food not be food, you might ask. Well, consider this: A McDonalds hamburger contains several different things. It is not 100% beef from a cow, but it does have beef. It also has ‘natural flavors’ as well as ‘additives’ and ‘preservatives’ which make up the majority of its composition, and often times contains over 50% saturated fat. This leaves very little room for any kind of meat. Here’s a breakdown of the average McDonalds menu:
Big Mac - 50% Saturated fat
Double cheeseburger - 54% Saturated fat
Quarter pounder with cheese - 61% Saturated fat
Double quarter pounder with cheese - 95% Saturated fat
Anything labeled ‘Angus’ is in the 80% range.
Any sausage biscuit in 60 and 70% range.
Deluxe breakfast contains up to 95-100% saturated fat depending on choices.
